How to Get Dewy Skin

I don’t want dewy glowing skin, said no-one ever. There is no doubt that skin is in and as a result heavy makeup is out. Having clear, healthy skin is and likely always will be popular. There are two key steps to amazing skin. First, you need to adopt healthy skin habits and routines and second you need to treat your skin with the proper skin care products.

Establish & Maintain Good Skin Habits

At the risk of sounding repetitive, these top three behaviors continue to come up when we talk about skin health.

  • Get Enough Sleep – Not getting enough sleep can damage your skin by affecting wound healing, collagen growth, skin hydration, and skin texture. Sleep depravation can also increase Inflammation, causing outbreaks of acne, eczema, psoriasis, and skin allergies. Adults should get 7-9 hours of sleep a night.
  • Use SPF Every Day – Take the time to find the best sunscreen with high SPF that’s perfect for you. If you’re struggling to find the perfect product check out this ranking from Allure.
  • Drink More Water – the average woman should drink a minimum of 11 cups of water a day to stay hydrated. If you can drink more, go for it!

Moisturize & Highlight Your Skin

  • Use Illuminating Moisturizer – Glamglow Glowstarter Mega Illuminating Moisturizer tops most lists. While its a bit more expensive their moisturizer comes in three shades to get the best natural glow for your skin type. If your looking for a value, NYXX Born to Glow tint does a great job and can also be mixed with your moisturizer to get the glow your seeking. NYXX Born to Glow ranges from $6-8 at CVS, Target, Walmart, Amazon and other local retailers. Cosmopolitan has a full list if illuminating moisturizers they recommend here.
  • Try integrating Coconut Oil into your beauty regime – Coconut oil is rich in fatty acids, which are a form of saturated fat. These fatty acids have been proven to have anti-inflammatory properties. Applying coconut oil directly to the skin may prevent the growth of bacterial microorganisms which should aid in the reduction of acne. Coconut oil helps to hydrate, treat eczema and helps to heal wounds. You should not use coconut oil if you have sensitive or oily skin. If you chose to try integrating coconut oil into your skin routine be sure to use refined coconut oil. Refined coconut oil is cleaner for the skin and has a more neutral scent. More details on coconut oil and skin can be found here at
  • Add An Essential Oil or Organic Facial Oil – A common skin care ailment that many people struggle with is skin discoloration. Whether the discoloration is from sun spots, age spots, acne scars or an uneven skin tone–we’ve all been hit with it at one point or another. Even if your sun damage isn’t showing itself on the surface just yet, it’s usually creeping underneath, and is readily visible with UV photography (look here) or the “structure” function on instagram’s editing suite. Both skin texture (clarity) and even skin tone are top contributing determinants for facial attractiveness (read full paper).. that’s like 2 of the top determinants out of the main 5. So, what can we do to achieve it? SHINE can really help. There are two key ingredients that make SHINE special – bearberry & licorice extract. The leaves of the common bearberry contain arbutin, a natural compound that has been shown to inactivate the enzyme responsible for skin pigmentation. Licorice extract has anti-inflammatory properties and may interrupt the stimulation of the enzyme that activates production of melanin, the skin’s pigment. This makes it a powerful ingredient for improving dark spots and areas of hyperpigmentation. Not only does licorice extract improve the appearance of dark spots, but it also has the ability to clear up acne-causing bacteria. It contains a component known as glabridin that is a potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory ingredient. This also makes it great for sensitive, reddened skin. In summary, getting that dewy, glowing skin comes down to establishing and maintaining healthy skin habits as well as moisturizing and highlighting your skin. Get your glow on!
