TWEEZERS 101: TOP TIPS FOR EYEBROW PLUCKING

Dear Megan,

What are some tips for eyebrow plucking?

– Madison

While I generally push for more brows, not less, we all know that things can get pretty hairy pretty fast, especially if you’re using a brow enhancer like WINK to help them. In any case, I have a lot of experience–good and bad–with plucking my eyebrows, so I can definitely pitch in on this one.

Here’s my best eyebrow plucking tips from years of experience:

Step 1: Find Your Shape

Find the best brow shape for your face shape (guide here). It’s also important to note the correct brow thickness, arch placement, and length for your face. This video by Sephora nails it, in my opinion.

Step 2: Draw Before You Drive

Draw that brow shape onto your brows, using a brow pencil (or even an eyeliner would work). This will help you see where you should and shouldn’t pluck. If you don’t do this, it’s easy to pluck away stray hairs that look like they stick out, but are actually in areas where you’re trying to grow your brows. This was a game changer for me.

 Step 3: Pare Down

Before you start plucking, brush your brow hairs upward with a spoolie (that’s the brush at the end of a brow pencil or lash comb), and trim them (using brow scissors) if they go outside of the drawn-on area. This is not a necessary step, but it will prevent you from accidentally plucking out hairs that look out of place, but are actually just a little too long.

Step 4: Get Prizzy WIth It

When it comes time to pluck, use tweezers with precise flat edges and no gap between the blades (like these). Get as close to the root of the hair as possible, even wiggly the tweezers down near it if you need to, and pluck pulling outward, toward your ear. So on the left side, pull the hairs outward toward your left ear and vice versa. This will help get the hair out by the root and not break it at the skin.
