Finding the Best Matte Liquid Lipstick

During the age of COVID, transfer-proof makeup is all the rage. Liquid lipstick is making a big comeback since women don’t want to worry about makeup smudging and/or staining their face masks.

The need for non transferable lipstick may be a temporary one but the good news is that you don’t need to spend a fortune to find the right liquid lipstick. We read reviews from the past few years and some of the top choices can be found in your local drug store. As we have mentioned in the past, beauty purchases at your local drug chain (CVS) are very helpful when trying something new since the costs are lower and they have a money back return policy if you don’t like the shade or product you purchased. This is offered since full service locations offer professional makeup advise and/or sampling. Just keep your receipts and you can return or exchange at your local store.

I’ll be honest, since COVID, I haven’t been wearing much makeup at all – let alone lipstick – but I am excited to find something that will look great and not smudge or stain. We thought it was important to frame expectations so we talked through out matte liquid lipstick wish list and landed on the following criteria:

  • Lasts all day without fading
  • Isn’t sticky
  • Doesn’t smudge
  • Doesn’t dry lips
  • Good value for money. This to us doesn’t mean inexpensive, but a good value for the quality or benefits the product offers.
  • Color assortment

When we read other reviews we kept seeing drug store Matte Liquid lipsticks ranked in the top 10 so we decided to focus on those items.

Some of the top drug store brands include:

  • L’Oréal Paris Infallible Pro-Matte Liquid Lipstick
  • Revlon Matte Ultra HD Matte Lip Mousse
  • Wet n Wild MegaLast Liquid Catsuit Matte Lipstick
  • Maybelline New York Super Stay Matte Ink Liquid Lipstick
  • Rimmel Stay Matte Liquid Lipstick

Not only did Allure rank these as the top 4 drugstore Matt liquid lipsticks but a test by reviewed.com also found their number 1 choice to be Wet n Wild MegaLast Liquid Catsuit Matte Lipstick. They were shocked to find this and surprised overall with their ranking.

Given, what we read we were excited to try the Wet n Wild MegaLast Liquid Catsuit Matte Lipstick. We went out to our local CVS and found it for $4.95. The market price ranges from $2.99 – $5.49. They have 14 colors to choose from. The store, we stopped at was fairly sold out so we opted for Berry Recognize. I should mention that we nearly purchased the red (Missy and Fierce). It looked like a really bold and good shade but red can get tricky so we didn’t go that direction. We found the color to go on smoothly, it was slightly tacky but not sticky. It lasted all day, even through meals. Did not transfer to masks or even to the touch and washed off easily in the evening. It felt very lightweight also left our lips feeling soft. Four of us tried this product and we all rated it a 5. We would recommend you go out and get some now!

We also decided to try the Revlon Matte Ultra HD Matt Lip Mouse. Revlon has 14 shade options and when you read the reviews many purchase it due to the many colors offered. The cost was higher @ $9.99 and the results were not as strong as the Wet n Wild lipstick. We found the Revlon Matte Ultra Matt Lip Mouse to be go on creamy but it stayed tacky/sticky to the touch. We also experienced transfer of color to cups and masks. It lasted a good 5 hours but did not last the whole day. As a team we would give this item a 3.5.

Given, our super positive experience with the Wet n Wild MegaLast Liquid Catsuit Matte Lipstick, we did not review the Maybelline, Rimmel or L’Oreal Matte Liquid Lipsticks. They could be equally impressive. In summary, we learned that you can get all that you’r hoping for at a minimal price. Somehow wearing lipstick over the past few days made us all feel a little more put together. We recommend you head to your local drugstore now and try the Wet n Wild item for yourself. I’m going back for the red!
