Eye makeup is definitely a love/hate relationship. You hate it put it on, but you gotta have it to look awake and alive, or else a clueless co-worker might ask “Are you sick today?” But the worst part about eye makeup? Removing it.
Removing mascara can feel like doing the rodeo with your eyelashes. Removing eyeshadow can turn into Holi celebration on your face. Sometimes it feels like you’re scrubbing the floors like Cinderella just to get a day’s makeup off.
This is Holi Festival.. or rather, my face after trying to remove eyeshadow
Forgetting to remove your makeup can cause a plethora of “things you don’t want near or on your face” like eye infections, sensitive skin on the lids and around the eyes, broken blood vessels, brittle eyelashes, and eyelash or eyebrow fallout–which could lead to lash/brow follicle trauma, meaning they won’t grow back in. Everytime I see an eyelash fall off during the process, I panic a little.
So let’s discover a more gentle way to remove makeup–not just gentle, but effective and even proactive. It will take a minute or less to do this in your home every day.
DIY Eye Makeup Remover
– 100% Kukui Nut Oil
– Tissue
That’s it.
Get a high-grade cold-pressed 100% kukui nut oil with no additional ingredients. A 50ml bottle will last you MONTHS and only cost about $16 on Amazon. Make sure to get the kind with the dropper. That will make this DIY 10x easier.
We chose kukui nut oil for it’s skin conditioning properties. Any oil should work to break down tough eye makeup formulations, like mascara or eyeshadow primer, but an oil too large will sit on top of the skin, causing an acne breakout. Kukui nut oil is full of natural Omega 3 and Omega 6 fatty acids, making it a great skin conditioner and additional boost for those eyelashes and eyebrows. Kukui nut oil is also an ingredient in Wink!

Every night, when you’re reading to remove your makeup, place 4-5 drops on a folded tissue. The extra oil will soak through to other layers, giving you extra space to wipe off your makeup with.
ust make one at a time. I use this eye makeup remover nightly.
How to Use the Eye Makeup Remover
Gently rub your lashes, eyelids and/or eyebrows–wherever you have makeup on–with the tissue. Keep gently rubbing and massaging the oil until the makeup starts to come off into the tissue.
Lashes are the trickiest. For removing mascara, grab the tissue with your fingers, so that the top two fingers (index and middle) and bottom finger (thumb) are covered in oiled tissue. Start at the base of the lashes and gently rub your finger tips together to “nestle into” the lashes. Keeping rubbing as you move slowly out toward the lashes tip.
DO NOT PULL. DO NOT TUG.
This is how you lose lashes and create trauama near the follicles! Trauma is not a one-off thing. Those lash follicles talk! If one lash follicle senses trauma, it will alert the nearby follicles, so they also might stop growing.
That’s right–tugging one lash out could mean losing an entire area.
Treat your lashes right. Gently, Tenderly remove that makeup. Repeat the series above until your lashes look and feel clean to the touch.
When you’re done, throw the dirty tissue away. Then…
