The colder months are never ideal for hair and skin, so we need to provide them both with that extra bit of care and protection against the weather. To help you maintain beautiful and healthy hair, even during the harshest winter months, here are five tips that should prove useful.
Tip #1: Try an Olive Oil and Lemon Juice Rinse
Mix two tablespoons of lukewarm olive oil with a single teaspoon of lemon juice to make this very effective concoction. Apply it to the scalp and massage for a few minutes before leaving it on – undisturbed – for at least half an hour. Now shampoo and condition as normal to remove winter dandruff from the scalp. This will also make your scalp less scratchy and irritable, as is common during the winter months.
Tip #2: Get Regular Trims
This may not feel like something that you would want to do, especially if you are planning to grow your hair or keep it at the same length, but regular trims are a great way to keep hair ends from splitting after becoming too dry from wintery conditions. It doesn’t exactly have to be a full trim; a bit of dusting of the ends every six weeks or so is usually enough and works pretty well to guard against split ends.
Tip #3: Get on an Irregular Wash Schedule
Unlike in the summer months when hair needs to be washed quite often, washing your hair on a daily basis is not only unnecessary but can also work against the health of your hair in the winter. Do not wash your hair more than two or three times every week to prevent dry hair during the colder months. Also, never go out without drying out your hair completely when you do wash it because the moisture in your hair combined with the cold air outside will severely damage the hair shafts within a very short time.
Tip #4: Detangle before Brushing
It’s natural for hair to get tangled, especially if you have long hair. While brushing tangled hair is always going to be harsh (not to mention painful!), it becomes particularly damaging during the winter months. Hair is generally drier at this time and that automatically makes it more brittle and prone to breakage while brushing. To avoid this self-inflicted damage on a regular basis during the cold, dry weather, use a detangling spray – like the one created by Beautopia Hair – which eliminates the entire painful and damaging episode from your winter hair care routine altogether.
Tip #5: Dive into Deep Conditioning
Whether you do it yourself or go to a salon, make sure that you deep condition your hair at least two to four times a month. This helps counteract the main effect of winter on our hair, which is a general loss of moisture. Try a deep conditioning mask or use a homemade recipe (avocado works great, I hear!) to keep your tresses deeply conditioned and protected.
So that’s it for the five most important winter hair care tips, but it doesn’t necessarily mean you can’t add a few tips of your own to this list! ? Nevertheless, if you manage to follow all five tips as mentioned here, the winter should pose no real challenge to your beautiful hair.
